About the Event

Juneteenth is celebrated to commemorate the emancipation of the last remaining slaves in a reluctant community, when Maj. Gordon Granger came to Galveston Texas and informed them that they were freed two years earlier by President Abraham Lincoln.

SWLA Center for Health Services will sponsor seven days of Juneteenth. Every day for seven days there will be events to celebrate the history of Juneteenth and African American history to bring ‘Pride’ to the community. The plight is to bring this event every year and make it better.

“I’m building off the energy of Faye Brown Blackwell who previously celebrated Juneteenth for many years,”
