Healthy North Lake Charles Launch
Time & Location
About the Event
SWLA Center for Health Services will launch a Healthy North Lake Charles program that includes a 90-day Healthy North Lake Charles Challenge. This challenge will be a combination of action and advocacy. SWLA will organize three groups of at least 50 individuals in each group: Diabetes, Hypertension and Obesity. Participants in these groups have been diagnosed with diabetes or pre-diabetes, hypertension and/or are overweight and will agree to work within a 90-day period to lower A1Cs, control and improve blood pressure and reduce weight and BMIs (depending upon their group). Over the course of the 90 days, participants will participate in educational, walking and bike riding groups, gym time, nutrition groups and cooking demonstrations. At the conclusion of the challenge, recognition and an award will be given to the winner from each group. The advocacy component is a proposed partnership with the City of Lake Charles to influence restaurants to offer at least two healthy options on their menus (1 vegetarian and 1 low-sodium). The focus of the overall program is to encourage the African-American and North Lake Charles communities to choose healthier lifestyles and healthier food options.
